HBU fails to stop McNeese

James Tabary picked apart the Houston Baptist secondary as McNeese State opened Southland Conference play with a 51-34 victory on Saturday night at Husky Stadium.

Tabary, who threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns in the first half, finished with 355 yards and four touchdowns. HBU’s Bailey Zappe tried to stay with him, passing for 348 yards and three scores, but he was also intercepte­d twice.

It was the first time McNeese (2-0, 1-0) opened league play with a win since 2015.

Dreshawn Minnieweat­her ran for 146 yards and two scores for the Huskies (1-1, 0-1).

TEXAS ST. 36 TEXAS SOUTHERN 20

A.J. Krawczyk returned a fumble 82 yards for a touchdown, and James Sherman booted five field goals to lead the Bobcats past the Tigers in San Marcos.

After falling behind 26-0, Texas Southern’s offense got untracked in the second half as Jay Christophe threw three touchdown passes, two of those to Tren’Davian Dickson, including a 75-yarder. Christophe had 315 yards on 21-of-40 passing.

Texas State is 10-0 alltime against TSU and has won 21 straight games against Southweste­rn Athletic Conference teams.

Remus Bulmer ran for a career-high three touchdowns, and Nathan Stewart had seven receptions for 120 yards to help the Bearkats beat the Panthers in Huntsville.

Junior quarterbac­k Mike Dare, who transferre­d from Lackawanna College after starting his career at Rutgers, was 20-of-40 passing for 169 yards with two touchdowns and two intercepti­ons in his first start for Sam Houston State (1-0).

Prairie View fell to 1-2.

NORTH TEXAS 58 INCARNATE WORD 16

Mason Fine threw for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns, three of them to Rico Bussey Jr. as the Mean Green routed the Cardinals in Denton.

North Texas is now 2-0 for the first time since 1994, its last season as a Division I-AA program.

Incarnate Word (0-2) had just 294 total yards.
