JACK R. HENRY

1926-2018

Jack R. Henry, age 92, of San Antonio, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 1, 1926, in San Antonio, Texas to the late Eugene Franklin and Lucy Alice (Stanley) Henry.

He was an active high school athlete when he attended Edgewood High School in San Antonio, Texas. He was all-district in football, basketball, track and baseball and was also captain of those teams. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science. At Southwest, he was a letterman in football, basketball and baseball and was honorable mention for all-conference honors. He received his Master’s in Education from the University of Houston.

He began his coaching career in Mercedes, Texas in 1951 coaching football. At Mercedes through 1958, his teams won 66, lost 18 and tied one. They won three consecutive district championships and went to the state quarterfinals in 1957. He also coached basketball at Mercedes, winning 156 and losing 82 and taking a team to the regional finals in 1954. His track teams won eight consecutive district championships. Between the years of 1958 and 1964, he coached at McAllen, Southwest Texas State and Harlingen.

From 1965 to 1969, he showed his talents as a versatile coach at Robstown, Texas. His football teams won 42 and lost 10 and went to the state quarterfinals in 1967. The track teams he coached won five consecutive district championships and his baseball teams won three district championships.

He coached at Pearland and Marble Falls from 1970 to 1974. In 1975 he began his administrative career at Corpus Christi and went on to Leander the next year, where he remained. In 1981, he was named Texas High School Coaches’ Association, Inc. (THSCA) ‘Hall of Honor’ member.

He was actively involved in sports and his community. He was the THSCA director from 1969 to 1971 and was nominated for the All-Star coaching position for the South football team. He was a member of the Corpus Christi chapter of Phi Delta Kappa and a member of the Masonic Lodge in Harlingen. He was also a member of the Red Red Rose, a professional school administrator’s organization.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia.

He is survived by his only son Bradley James Henry.

Friends may call on Monday, September 10, 2018 from 9 am to 4 pm at the funeral home. Graveside services with Naval Honors will be conducted on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at 10:00 am at the Pavilion at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas 78218
