No time for diet food

Favorite animal? Steak!

Regarding “Seeking a healthier heart. Eat a big steak.” (Outlook, Wednesday), it’s so good to see a cardiologist go counter the prevailing opinion of the medical community when it comes to saturated fat in the human diet. We have all been brainwashed to believe the false narrative that animal fat is the demon when current evidence is now implicating so-called “vegetable” (seed) oils as the true villain. Corn, soybean, sunflower and cottonseed oil did not exist in the human diet before 1900 when the industrial process was developed to extract oil from these seeds. For thousands of years humans lived without them. People cooked with lard, butter and beef tallow.

Research is now demonstrating that these oils are high in omega 6 fatty acids promoting system-wide inflammation leading to heart disease, obesity, Type 2 diabetes and cancer. They have become ubiquitous in processed food on grocery store shelves and in vending machines. Every restaurant now uses these oils for deep frying, causing them to oxidize because of the high temperatures leading to bad health effects when ingested over time.U

Unfortunately, only people with a strong interest in nutrition know that they need to be avoided like the plague. Randal Jones, Houston

Judges want justice

Regarding “Pros and cons of straightticket voting” (Outlook, Thursday), the notion that state judges should be elected based on party affiliation is beyond idiotic. Those of us who know the judiciary, know that party affiliation has nothing to do with an individual judge’s qualifications and ability.

We have all seen good judges from both parties defeated when there has been a wave that cast their party aside. Who pays the price for such actions? Certainly the defeated judges and their staff. But in the end, the public pays the price when we lose good judges.

When we elect judges based on party affiliation, we are ignoring individual qualifications. When voters vote for judges based solely on party affiliation, they often cast votes without any actual knowledge about the candidates they are voting for or against.

If we want the best possible judges, we must change the way we pick judges. Robert J. Fickman, Houston

GOP all the way

I for one, plan on voting straight ticket Republican in the upcoming election. Why? Precisely because as Noah Horwitz pointed out “the Democratic Party’s continued leftward plunge makes me uneasy.” I have seen countless videos of people being beaten up by leftist thugs merely for wearing a Trump Tshirt or a “Make America Great Again” cap. However, I have NEVER seen anyone being beaten up for wearing a Hillary shirt.

I applaud former Democrats in the #Walkaway movement for recognizing what the Democratic Party has morphed into and walking away from it. Jennifer Hoepfl, Tomball

Check the stats, again

Regarding “Chaos or not, Trump clearly winning on foreign policy” (Outlook, Friday), columnist Marc Thiessen says President Donald Trump is winning on foreign policy.

If alienating your allies, cozying up to dictators and announcing that he, too, wants to be president for life is winning, then I guess Trump is winning. But America is losing. Patricia Roberts, Bellaire
