DAPHNE PICKERING

-

1932-2018

Daphne Roberts Pickering, 86, died on Monday, October 22, 2018 from the effects of a stroke. She left her earthly life as she lived it, eager to get on to her next big adventure. She lived her life fully and with enthusiastic enjoyment: a great example to her more cautious colleagues.

Daphne was born in Pirbright, Surrey, England. She was predeceased by husband C. Gerald, parents, and brother Peter. She is survived by sister-in-law Janet, brother-in-law Ron, nieces and nephews in England and Canada, and countless faithful friends. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the British Empire, Windsor chapter.

Daphne’s spirit of adventure was obvious from her youth, as evidenced by her unaccompanied student exchange trips to the continent while still in school. She emigrated to Canada following graduation from business school. She resided in Toronto and then in Calgary, where she met and married Gerry, her soulmate for fifty-five years. Throughout her life she lived in far flung locations due to his career as a geophysicist – Alaska, California, Libya, Abu Dhabi, and Switzerland, visiting every continent except Antarctica. For the past fifty years Daphne called Houston home, working at the British Consulate for most of her career.

Daphne’s passions were traveling, sailing, and playing bridge. She was a long-time member of the Houston Yacht Club where she lent her dynamic and vigorous personality to every activity she touched; she especially enjoyed the women’s sailing camps. She was an enthusiastic member of many bridge groups and delighted in rehashing her hands of the previous day.

Daphne was a beautiful, vital lady both inside and out. We, the ones she left behind, rejoice in the experience of knowing her.

A memorial service will be held at the Houston Yacht Club, 3620 Miramar Drive, Shoreacres, TX 77571 on Thursday, November 1st. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Daphne’s memory to the Houston Yacht Club.
