TSU earns first SWAC victory

Devin Williams threw for two touchdowns, and Texas Southern scored twice on fumble returns to beat Mississipp­i Valley State 42-14 on Saturday at BBVA Compass Stadium for its first Southweste­rn Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Tylor Cook scored on a 1-yard run on the Tigers' opening drive, and Williams' 22-yard TD pass to Bobby Hartzog capped the second drive.

Sean Jones forced Dejerric Bryant to fumble on the Delta Devils’ next possession, and Patrick Howell picked up the ball and ran 80 yards for the score.

Texas Southern (2-6, 1-4) led 21-0 at halftime after holding Mississipp­i State (1-6, 1-3) to three first downs and 100 total yards, and went ahead 28-7 after Williams' 26-yard TD pass to Hartzog in the third quarter.

Brad Woodward scored on a 69-yard run that was set up by Marquel Daigle's intercepti­on, and T arrol Stafford recovered Bryant' s fumble during a sack in the end zone.

SAM HOUSTON ST. 28 SE LOUISIANA 25

Ty Brock threw for 320 yards, Dee Bowens caught eight passes for 155 yards and a touchdown, and Kyran Jackson ran for three scores as the Bearkats beat the Lions at Huntsville.

Sam Houston State (5-3, 4-2 Southland Conference) struck early when Brock hit Bowens on a 64-yard scoring strike on the third play of the game. Jackson then ran it in from the 2 for a 14-0 lead. Southeaste­rn Louisiana (3-6, 3-4) closed to 14-10 at the break. Jackson bulled across from the 2 in the third and broke for an 11-yard score early in the fourth for a 28-10 lead.

The Lions narrowed the gap after De vonte Williams and Chason Virgil each scored from the 1. Virgil passed to Bransen Schwebel for a two-point conversion with 2:59 remaining for the final score.

LAMAR 24 STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 17

Jordan Hoy ran for 225 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals won at Nacogdoche­s for their third consecutiv­e victory.

Hoy also passed for 72 yards to help Lamar (4-4, 3-3) beat SFA (2-6, 2-5) on the road for the first time since 1982.

Jake Blumrick threw for 335 yards and two TDs for the Lumberjack­s.
