Linking to use a website’s images

- helpline@chron.com

Q: I used to be able to transfer images to Word documents from articles in Yahoo by copying and pasting into the document, but now I can’t. Any suggestions on how I can transfer images into Word?

A: From what I can see, the issue does not appear to be the result of any changes to Windows. It appears to be a change in the way Yahoo has formatted its site.

When I copy an image from Yahoo and paste it into Word, I just get a blank spot. If I go to another site and do the same, it seems to work. It is not surprising that the owners of certain websites would have code embedded to thwart the appropriation of their content. It is in the site owner’s interest to make it as difficult as possible for anyone to steal their content. If there is content on the web that you are interested in sharing, consider sending a link to the article rather than re-creating the content in a document.

If you do find yourself needing to create your own document, consider using images that are in the public domain and not controlled by copyright.

Q: Google Chrome is sometimes slow, and I see a message that says “Waiting For Cache” before eventually loading the next page. How can I fix this?

A: As you surf the web, Chrome will save files on your hard drive in what’s called a cache file. This is supposed to enhance web browsing by keeping certain files downloaded from the internet on your system so they don’t have to be downloaded again.

This cache file can become corrupted and can cause Chrome to slow down.

If restarting Chrome or even rebooting your PC doesn’t clear this up, you may need to reset the cache. The Google support doc at tinyurl.com/helplinechromecache explains how to do this in detail.
