Q: Do you have any recommendations for virus protection on a smartphone?

A: When it comes to securing a smartphone or a tablet, the first thing you want to do is just be careful of what you install on it. Poorly written software or software created by unscrupulous developers can pose a threat.

If you have an Apple device, you should procure apps only from the Apple App Store. If you have an Android device, you should procure your apps only from the Google Play Store. This is the best way to make sure you are getting legitimate software for your device.

As to antivirus software, all of the major vendors — Symantec,

Avast, AVG — have solutions available. The jury is out as to how effective these programs are. But if it will give you peace of mind, then by all means, install antivirus software.

Q: My computer came with weird fonts that are a real chore to scroll through when looking for the one I need. I’ve tried removing them by the normal add/remove font process, but they won’t go away. Any help will be much appreciated.

A: The easiest way to remove fonts is to click Start and then type fonts in the search box and hit Enter. This will open your fonts folder where you can see all your installed fonts with a preview of the style.

In here you can select the fonts you wish to remove and delete them.

The trick is either to select the font and then hit the Delete key or to right-click the font and select Delete. You can’t just drag them to the Recycle Bin. Note that you can’t delete all of your fonts: Some are uses by the operating system and are protected.

Once you delete a font, it is gone for good. If you want the font back you will have to find a copy and reinstall it.
