ORTIZ RELEASED FROM ICU
David Ortiz’s wife says he has moved out of intensive care.
Tiffany Ortiz said in a statement distributed by the Red Sox on Saturday that the ex-Boston slugger remains hospitalized and in good condition, almost two weeks after he was shot in the back while at a club in the Dominican Republic.
Ortiz was flown to Boston the next day for treatment.
Dominican prosecutors say Ortiz was attacked in a case of mistaken identity by a gunman who was hired to kill an auto shop owner.
OAKLAND ATHLETICS
A season full of All-Star potential for pitcher Frankie Montas was drastically cut short when Major League Baseball suspended him 80 games after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
Montas pitched well Thursday night and is 9-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 15 starts, a big reason the A’s are 40-36.
The 26-year-old righty could return for the final week of the season. But the penalty makes him ineligible for the All-Star Game and postseason play this year.
The commissioner’s office said Montas tested positive for Ostarine, a PED. He is the sixth player suspended this year under the major league drug program.
TEXAS RANGERS
Third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera plans to appeal a fourgame suspension from Major League Baseball for throwing equipment on the field that hit umpire crew chief Bill Miller.
Cabrera tossed his shin guard with the gloves wrapped inside of it after his ejection in the sixth inning of a 4-2 win over Cleveland.
“I wasn’t trying to hit anybody. I think the umpire is the last guy you want to hit,” Cabrera said. “I was just trying to throw the gloves out there to let him know I was (unhappy), instead of walking back to home plate.”
