ATLANTA BRAVES

The team placed right fielder Nick Markakis and infielder Dansby Swanson on the 10-day injured list before Saturday night’s game against the Phillies. Markakis suffered a broken left wrist when he was hit by a pitch Friday night. Manager Brian Snitker said Markakis won’t need surgery and could return in six to eight weeks. Swanson has a bruised right foot. Snitker is hopeful Swanson will return when he’s eligible to come off the injured list.

BOSTON RED SOX

Former slugger David Ortiz is out of the hospital after three surgeries from being shot in the back at a bar in the Dominican Republic.

CHICAGO CUBS

The team placed infielder Daniel Descalso on the injured list with a sprained left ankle and added pitcher Derek Holland to the active roster.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

The team traded lefthanded reliever Jake Diekman to the Athletics for two minor league prospects. Kansas City also recalled pitcher Kyle Zimmer and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn from Class AAA Omaha. Struggling first baseman Lucas Duda was designated for assignment. Diekman is 0-6 with a 4.75 ERA in 48 relief appearances this season, but he has allowed just one run in his last six outings. He isn’t signed beyond this year, making him an obvious trade candidate. In return, the Royals got 26-yearold outfielder Dairon Blanco and 20-year-old righthander Ismael Aquino from Oakland.

MINNESOTA TWINS

The AL Central-leading team acquired veteran reliever Sergio Romo in a trade with Miami, hoping to boost their beleaguered bullpen for the stretch. The Twins got the 36-year-old Romo, minor league pitcher Chris Vallimont and a player to be named for minor league first baseman Lewin Diaz. Romo was 2-0 with 17 saves and a 3.58 ERA in 38 games this season. The righty had an 0.61 ERA in his last 15 appearances for the Marlins.

NEW YORK METS

Outfielder Dominic Smith has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left foot injury.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

The team acquired Jose Pirela, a 29-year-old utility player, from San Diego for cash considerations. Pirela was added to the 40-man roster and optioned immediately to Class AAA.
