Handling blocked email on iPhone

- helpline@chron.com

Q: I have blocked quite a few spam emails on my iPhone, but I still see them when looking at my mail app. Each has a note that says, “This message is from a sender in your blocked list” and I was wondering how to stop seeing this.

A: When blocking messages on your iPhone, there are two options in the settings that will control what happens when you receive a message from an address that you have blocked.

One option is to simply mark it as being from a blocked sender. The other options is to mark it as being from a blocked sender and then move the message to your trash folder.

To change how blocked email is handled on your device, tap Settings, Mail and then Blocked Sender Options. Here you can choose the action you want.

Keep in mind that blocking email senders on your phone does nothing to actually stop the message from being delivered to your mailbox. It just gives you a way to more easily dismiss messages you don’t care to read.

If you are receiving a lot of unwanted, spam email I would suggest using a mail provider such as Google, as they have very good spam filtering tools.

My Gmail account blocks hundreds of spam messages a week, so I rarely see anything in my inbox that isn’t something I actually want to read.

Something to keep in mind about spam filtering is that no system is foolproof. I check my spam folder periodically as the filter will occasionally block something that’s not actually spam.

And if you do decide to switch to Gmail, it has the ability to connect to your existing email account so that you can still receive email at your old address and also take advantage of their filtering tools.

The article at tinyurl.com/ helplinegmail describes how to link your Yahoo account to a Gmail account. The steps are similar for other providers.
