Restaurants going extra mile

-

Coping

Regarding “How our readers are coping with coronavirus,” (A30, March 29): I am fortunate to live in downtown Houston, which has myriad restaurants trying to stay alive and to employ staff. What is amazing are the “extras” that these restaurants add to our order.

A nearby dining room sent along a half dozen chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookies. Said they had so much product. Our neighborhood Chinese establishment sent a dozen pork egg rolls to add to my order for four vegetable egg rolls. An additional green salad and dressing for two was included in one carry-out order. We are trying to support restaurants, but they are supporting us as well. Thank you.

As our days are darkened by a health crisis, I find light by regularly drawing pictures and cartoons for loved ones as far away as Arizona, Washington, Ohio and New York. In one world dimmed by the pall of a pandemic, I lose myself in another world of colors, shapes and designs, all of which bring joy to the young hearts who receive them.

At a time where anxiety and despair seem to grip the minds of so many, I relish the opportunity to inspire others through animation and imagination. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” we are told in the book of Proverbs, and the warmth generated in the lives of those for whom I draw radiates just as brightly in my own life. That is my small way of sharing some sunshine as these days pass.
