Anger is understandable

-

We are human

A person in one of the demonstration groups shouted out, “I am not black, I am not white, I am human.” What a wonderful testimony to how some people feel. We should make this our motto in memory of George Floyd, so that his death will not have been in vain. I came to the U.S. 60 years ago from Europe and have met some wonderful people of all colors. I am hoping, in my old age, I can see an America we can all be proud of.

I understand completely the protesters’ frustration and outrage over the murder of yet another black man by the police. I am totally in sympathy with all of them; however, I am outraged that a police officer killed an American citizen, whether he be black, brown, yellow, white or any other color! Thank goodness we have that video to prove exactly what happened and no longer will rogue police be able to get away with their abusive behavior. I wish I could be on that jury.

Regarding “‘Threat level’ chart unveiled by Hidalgo,” 9A1, June 12): I work out at a very nice gym in downtown Houston that caters to mostly an affluent and educated clientele. I have been amazed at the number of people who do not clean and disinfect the workout equipment before and after using it. I watched four different people use the same machine and no one took the time to clean and disinfect it before or after they used it. The gym management has placed cleaning wipes in multiple locations, and there are staff who constantly wander the floor and clean equipment. But most people do not take the time to disinfect the equipment. People need to be more conscientious or we’re going to see another dangerous spike in new infections.

Clarification: A June 12 editorial criticized Mayor Sylvester Turner for killing a budget amendment Wednesday that would have given subpoena power to Houston’s police oversight board. We called it a mistake. However, the editorial should have included the context that Turner has not publicly taken a position on whether the oversight board should have subpoena power. He said he opposed the amendment because it wasn’t germane to the budget and should be considered by the task force he created to review Houston Police Department policies.
