Security is key in Windows S mode

- Helpline@chron.com

Q: I bought anew computer and it is running something called Windows 10 S mode, which apparently does not allow the installation of an antivirus or antimalware applications. Do you recommend exiting Smode and installing those applications?

A: The idea behind Windows 10 S mode is that Windows greatly restricts what can and cannot be installed on your PC by limiting downloads to only apps that are obtained from the Microsoft Store and restricts you to using Microsoft Edge for your Web browsing.

This version of Windows is designed to provide a much more secure computing experience while still providing something akin to an actual Windows 10 experience.

Depending on the user, this system might actually be pretty good in that it protects the user from themselves without the need to worry about questionable software that might be installed as a result of making a poor or uninformed choice.

The good news is that it can be disabled. Instructions for doing this can be found at tinyurl.com/helplinesmodeswitch.

Q: I amusing a MacBook Pro with a second monitor to host meetings on Zoom where I am showing a Powerpoint presentation on the second monitor. The problemis that when I launch Zoom and go into full screen mode, mysecond monitor goes blank until I disable full screen. Is there a fix for this?

A: This issue is caused by a setting in Mission Control, the app that lets you access and manage multiple windows and a pp sony our Mac by giving you a view of all your open windows, desktop spaces and apps you have open in full screen or Split View.

The quick fix for this is to open System Preferences and click on Mission Control. Look for the options that says Displays have separate Spaces and put a check in the box.

Log out of the computer and log back in.
