Texas Tech tops Baylor in thriller

-

LUBBOCK — Jonathan Garibay kicked a 25-yard field goal on the final play of the game to cap the host Red Raiders’ secondhalf rally in a 24-23 win over Baylor on Saturday.

It was the fourth field goal for Garibay in his first game as starting kicker for the Red Raiders (3-5, 2-5 Big 12).

Tahj Brooks had two touchdown runs for Texas Tech, and former starter Alan Bowman was back at quarterback in the second half, directing the comeback.

Jalen Pitre returned an interception for a touchdown for the second week in a row for Baylor (1-5, 1-5), which lost its fifth game in a row and hasn’t won in Lubbock in three decades.

Baylor quarterback Charlie Brewer had an 8-yard touchdown keeper early in the third quarter to put the Bears up 20-6. Their only other score was John Mayers’ third field goal later in the third quarter, a 23-yarder.

Brewer completed 17 of 26 passes for 153 yards with an interception.

Bowman, replaced by Henry Colombi as the quarterback three games ago, played only one drive in the first half, when his pass was picked off and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown that put Baylor up 7-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Colombi was 9- of-15 passing for 76 yards for Texas Tech, but appeared to bang his elbow in the first half, and never returned after taking another hit to the elbow in the third quarter. Bowman finished 14- of-23 for 181 yards.

WEST VIRGINIA 24, TCU 6

Jarret Doege threw two touchdown passes and ran for one score, Leddie Brown surpassed 100 rushing yards for the fifth time this season and the host Mountaineers beat the Horned Frogs.

West Virginia (5-3, 4-3 Big 12) used a balanced offensive attack to beat TCU (3-4, 3-4) for the third straight season.

The Horned Frogs were held to a pair of field goals, the first time they were held out of the end zone since 2016 against Kansas State.

It was the first game a West Virginia defense held an opponent out of the end zone since 2018, also against Kansas State.

Brown had three rushes of at least 30 yards to pile up 156 yards on the ground.

With TCU trailing 17-6 in the fourth quarter, Trevon Moehrig fumbled a punt, which was recovered by West Virginia’s Sean Mahone. Two plays later, Doege floated a pass to a streaking T. J. Simmons for a 38-yard touchdown.

Doege, who had a 1yard touchdown run to finish off a 99-yard drive in the first quarter and also found Simmons with a 26-yard scoring strike in the second, finished 19 of 26 for 212 yards.

TCU’s Max Duggan finished 16 of 29 with 161 yards and an interception. He ran 10 times for 19 yards.
