Texas deserves better

Regarding “Paxton sues to dump votes in 4 states,” (A3, Dec. 9): I’ve lived in

Texas for almost 40 years, and it is a great state with a rich history. But for whatever reason it produces some really awful politicians — on both sides of the aisle. The list is long, but unquestionably at the top of that list is the current Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The guy came into office under indictment, has spent much of his time as AG trying to take away people’s Affordable Care Act health care coverage, is currently confronting very serious bribery charges, and then filed a lawsuit, I guess on behalf of all Texans, pushing to overturn the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. How this guy manages to stay in office is beyond me. Texas really deserves better.

Thanks to teachers, USPS

Regarding “Generation Z gives us hope for the future” (Dec. 11): Kudos to Leigh Anne Rayburn. She is such a caring, creative and flexible teacher. This article gave me hope, knowing there are teachers like her working with students. The classes of 2020 and 2021 have certainly been pushed and pulled this way and that this past year. High school is a once-in-alifetime experience and so many teens have had the best parts of the experience stolen by COVID-19. Here comes a teacher who knows how to pull the very best from her students.

Kathryn Haueisen, Houston We just received a postcard from our grandson who was visiting Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. The card was written on both sides. Like an afterthought, the delivery address was squeezed in, on the lower left side, where no machine could have read it.

I am greatly impressed and thankful for the kindness of a postal employee who took the time to process this piece of mail by hand. I’ve always admired the U.S. Postal Service, which in my opinion is too little celebrated and often taken for granted. Mail keeps humans in touch. It brings us personal news, joy and sometimes sorrow. The men and women who deliver our mail brave all kinds of weather, and yes, even dogs, every working day. In these troubled times as well as in the past, the mail has always been a beacon of light and hope.
