Butler scores 28 as Baylor stays perfect

FORT WORTH — Jared Butler and No. 2 Baylor made sure TCU got no carryover from a buzzerbeat­ing shot from about 65 feet just before halftime.

Down at the half for the first time this season, the Bears scored the first seven points after the break and went on to a 67-49 victory Saturday.

“That’s a really big thing … to have a short memory,” Butler said. “They hit the shot at the end of the half. It definitely could be a momentum swinger, and we kind of just threw that away and said it’s a new half.”

Butler scored a seasonhigh 28 points, 16 after the break. MaCio Teague added 12 points and Davion Mitchell 10 for the Bears (11-0, 4-0 Big 12), who have won every game by at least 11 points.

Mike Miles had 15 of his 17 points by halftime for the Horned Frogs (9-4, 2-3), who led at halftime only because of the freshman’s highlight 3-pointer from about two-thirds of the length of the court that made it 28-27.

“Second half, they just took it took to us. They’ve got guys that have been through it and are playing well, with a lot of confidence,”

TCU coach Jamie Dixon said.

RJ Nembhard had 14 points and Kevin Samuel had 11 rebounds for TCU, which played consecutiv­e home games against Top 10 opponents for the first time in school history. No. 6 Kansas beat the Frogs 93-64 last Tuesday.

eight points on 2-of-8 shooting in Baylor’s 76-61 victory over Oklahoma on Wednesday night.

Travis Evee scored a game-high 21 points to go with six assists and Max Fiedler added 19 points and 13 rebounds as the Owls defeated the Miners at the Don Haskins Centerin El Paso.

Rice (9-3, 3-1 Conference USA) split the two-game series with UTEP.

Avery Sullivan had a career-high 25 points plus 12 rebounds as the Cardinals beat the Huskies at Beaumont.

Sullivan hit 11 of 12 shots. Quinlan Bennett had 10 points for Lamar (3-9, 1-2

Southland Conference). Anderson Kopp added 10 points. Kasen Harrison had six assists.

NO. 18 TEXAS TECH 91 IOWA ST. 64

Kyler Edwards scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half as the Red Raiders built a huge lead and breezed past the Cyclones at Ames, Iowa.

The Red Raiders (10-3, 3-2 Big 12) used a pair of 12-0 runs to make it 54-28 with just over a minute left before the break.

Mac McClung added 18 points for the Red Raiders. Kevin McCullar finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Solomon Young and Rasir Bolton led the Cyclones (2-7, 0-5) with 15 points each.

Women RICE 55, UTEP 43

The Owls put together their best defensive performanc­e of the season at Tudor Fieldhouse to sweep the weekend series with the Miners.

Rice (8-1, 4-0) allowed a season low in points.

Senior center Nancy Mulkey recorded six blocks for a second straight game against the

Miners (5-4, 2-2).

WEST VIRGINIA 92 NO. 17 TEXAS 58

Kysre Gondrezick scored 14 of her 24 points in the first half and the host Mountainee­rs snapped the Longhorns’ five-game win streak.

Gondrezick posted on her Twitter account on Friday that her father, 57-year-old Grant Gondrezick, had died. He played at Pepperdine in the mid-80’s and spent two seasons in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers.

Esmery Martinez had 19 points for West Virginia (8-2, 2-2 Big 12).

Joanne Allen-Taylor scored 12 points and Celeste Taylor had 10 for Texas (8-2, 2-1).

Maria Alvarez scored a career-high 23 points with six 3-pointers and Bethy Mununga scored 12 with 14 rebounds as the Bulls blasted the Cougars at Tampa, Fla.

South Florida (9-1, 6-0 American Athletic Conference) extended its winning streak to eight consecutiv­e games.
