ARTHUR EARL STIMSON

1920-2021

-

Arthur Earl Stimson passed away on January 24, 2021 at the age of 100. He was the widower of Eleanor (English) Stimson. Born on December 13, 1920 in Houston, he was the son of Arthur Carl Stimson and Irene (Gawley) Stimson. Art took pride at being born into a multi-generational family of Houstonians. While he enjoyed his many travels around Texas, Houston was always home. He attended Schreiner Institute and later graduated from University of Texas, following more than three years continuous duty in the Pacific Theater during World War II, where he served his country proudly and with distinction as a rifle platoon leader, acting company commander, “L” Company staff officer, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment and as Aide-de-camp to the Commanding General, 24th Infantry Division in the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service with Filipino guerilla troops on the islands of Mindoro and Verde. He was interviewed about his time in WWll for the Veterans History Project; the interview can be listened to at the following web address: http://memory.loc. gov/diglib/vhp/story/loc. natlib.afc2001001.96513. An avid bird watcher, Art enjoyed feeding his many avian friends, along with the occasional squirrel (he never minded one or two getting in on the action). Art also possessed a green thumb for gardening and loved seeing his plants grow. Harvesting his fig crop annually, he greatly enjoyed making gift bags to share with loved ones. But Art loved to watch all things grow, most of all his family. He was a loving family member who cherished the birth of every new relative and stayed deeply in touch with his kin throughout his entire life. And he could cut a rug with the best of them! If gardening was his hobby, then dancing was his raison d’être. Always positive, never bitter or grumpy, Art brightened everyone’s day. He is survived by his sons, Arthur Coleman Stimson and David Lewis Stimson, both of Houston; by his brother Julian Lewis Stimson, of Austin; and by the family of his departed sister Eleanor Ann (Stimson) Potter (Mrs. Richard C. Potter), formerly a longtime resident of Southern California. At Art’s request there will be no funeral or other service.
