ROBERTA LEE HOUSE BENSON

-

2021

Roberta Lee House Benson, age 80, went home to her Lord on February 13, 2021. Roberta was born in San Antonio to Lota Clyde (Head) and Roland Lee House. She was educated at Saint Mary’s Hall (3rd-12th grades). After her freshman year at Wake Forest University Roberta finished her collegiate education at the University of Texas at Austin, earning Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education. At UT she pledged Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, served as President of Panhellenic and was a member of Mortarboard.

After teaching briefly in public schools, Roberta made her career as a Christian educator of young children, serving four Presbyterian churches: Northwood and First in San Antonio and, after moving to Houston in 1989, Grace and Windwood in that city. During her 30 years in Houston, she was an active member of Who’s Who International, Knife and Fork Club, and the Assistance League of Houston. In the latter she served on the scholarship committee and Kids on the Block puppets. She loved children and children loved her. Roberta also loved and supported the Houston symphony, opera and museums.

Another love was worldwide travel. She visited

Africa, Australia, New Zealand and many countries in Europe. Her home in Houston was a great source of joy to her, and she found much pleasure in sharing her yard, flowers and swimming pool.

She returned to San Antonio in mid-2019 to be near family and friends.

Roberta is survived by her son Edward Allen Benson II and his wife Erin and by her grandson Edward Allen Benson III (Trey), also by her sister Rosemary House Brevard and her husband John, and by numerous cousins. The family would like to thank both the Amada Senior Caregivers who cared for Roberta for 8 months and those Right at Home caregivers who saw her through her last days and cannot express enough gratitude to her wonderful circle of friends from Northwood Presbyterian who honored their years of friendship with devoted attention in the last year of her life.

Roberta’s memorial service and internment will take place at Sunset Memorial

Park but due to covid-19 will be private, attendance by invitation only. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, 5920 W.
