Cy Park outlasts Cy Ranch in 5 overtimes

Nothing would stand in Cypress Park’s way for its own slice of history. Not even five overtimes.

The Tigers withstood the gauntlet to defeat Cypress Ranch 69-67 on Saturday in the Class 6A Region II quarterfin­als at the Berry Center. It’s the best playoff run for the five-year-old school.

While it’s a tough ending for Cy Ranch, the Mustangs turned in an impressive 2020-21 campaign at 23-6 overall. Cy Park and Cy Ranch tied for second in District 16-6A this season.

Now comes the tough part for Cy Park — Duncanvill­e. The Panthers are ranked second in the Texas Associatio­n of Basketball Coaches 6A boys rankings and is once again a state favorite. A time, date and location for the regional semifinal had not been set yet as of press time.

Cy-Fair ISD took center stage on Saturday with Cypress Lakes and Cypress Woods also meeting in another 6A-II quarterfin­al at the Berry Center. Cy Woods took that matchup in a 45-36 win. Charles Haubein led Cy Woods and all scorers with 15 points as the Wildcats head to the regional tournament for the first time since 2014.

Panthers make school history

Ridge Point is headed to the Region III-6A semifinals

for the first time in school history, grinding out a 41-39 victory against District 17-6A champion Cypress Creek on Saturday at Merrell Center. The Panthers will play Atascocita next round.

Reggie Prudhomme stole Cy Creek’s inbounds pass with four seconds remaining and heaved the ball downcourt to ice the victory. The Panthers held the Cougars without a shot

on their final possession after running most of the final two minutes off the clock then missing the front end of a one-and-one.

Luis Rodriguez scored 12 points and Caleb Hill scored 11 with two steals to lead Ridge Point (14-5). Kolby Granger had a teamhigh seven rebounds along with four points. Prudhomme added six points and four assists.

Damian Richards led Cy

Creek (21-4) with nine points, while Braylon Haynes had eight points, eight rebounds and a block.

Hill sparked Ridge Point with two first-quarter three-pointers for a 10-5 lead, but free throws by Corey Hadnot put Cy Creek ahead 11-10.

Two baskets each by Jaylen Salsman and Haynes helped the Cougars break a second-quarter tie and lead 28-24 at halftime.

No. 12 Atascocita holds off Dawson

Atascocita got its first true test in the playoffs Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles held off Dawson for a 55-45 win a Class 6A regional quarterfin­al playoff game at the Merrell Center. Dawson finishes the season 25-6.

Atascocita, ranked 12th in the Texas Associatio­n of Basketball Coaches 6A poll, advances to the Region III-6A tournament for the first time since 2015-16.

Atascocita (22-2) will play the winner of the other regional quarterfin­al against Ridge Point.

Atascocita built a 34-20 lead after Justin Collins knocked down a 3-pointer late in the second quarter.

Dawson battled back with an 8-0 run to finish the second quarter, Tyree Davis scoring six of those points as Atascocita went into the locker room with a 34-28 lead at halftime.

Collins had a game-high 16 points, and Cameron Morrison added 12 points.

AJ Richard and Davis each had 15 points.

Bulldogs rally to upset Sharks

The last time Shadow Creek and Summer Creek played in the regular season, the Sharks hit a game winning shot at the buzzer.

The Bulldogs, ranked 14th in the TABC rankings, flipped the switch and got their revenge Saturday at the Merrell Center and rallied to upset Shadow Creek 68-59 in a Class 6A regional quarterfin­al game.

The Bulldogs (19-5) advance to the Region III-6A tournament for the second straight season and will play Fort Bend Elkins in a Region III-6A semifinal playoff game with a time and date to be determined to be at a later date. Elkins defeated Heights 55-45 in its regional quarterfin­al match.

The Sharks ends the season 22-3.

Shadow Creek, the No. 6 team, had all the momentum in the first half and led 33-30 heading into the locker room at halftime.

Summer Creek’s man-toman and press defense caused trouble for the Sharks in the third quarter as the Bulldogs outscored Shadow Creek 20-9 to take a 50-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Summer Creek’s Amaree Abram led the Bulldogs with 20 points and post Reyce Allen added 16 points.

Shadow Creek’s Ramon Walker, who is a University of signee, finished his high school career with a gamehigh 25 points. Manny Hatchett added 14 points for the Sharks.
