Rice rally falls short against North Texas

Jasmine Smith scored 18 points, but Rice’s comeback fell short against North Texas as the Owls lost 75-66 in their regularsea­son finale.

The Owls climbed back from a 17-point deficit, but the Mean Green pulled away, led by Quincy Noble’s 27 points.

Lauren Schwartz and Nancy Mulkey each added 12 points for Rice (16-3, 12-2 Conference USA), while Emma Villas-Gomis and N’Yah Boyd had 15 and 13 points, respective­ly, for North Texas (13-6, 10-4).

Zya Nugent scored 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the visiting Ladyjacks beat the Bearkats.

Faith Cook led Sam Houston State with 15 points, and Amber Leggett finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Julija Vujakovic was among four starters to finish in double figures, scoring 20 points to lead the host Huskies past the Islanders.

Jordan Walker and Jordan Horston had 11 points each for Tennessee.

Elissa Cunane had 23 points and nine rebounds, and the Wolfpack stormed back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat the Yellow Jackets and advance to the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championsh­ip in Greensboro, N.C.

Lorela Cubaj had a strong game with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Lotta-Maj Lahtinen added 17 points and five assists for Georgia Tech.

Dana Evans scored 13 points, Olivia Cochran added 10 points and 10 rebounds as the Cardinals advanced to the ACC tournament championsh­ip game in Greensboro, N.C.

Emily Engstler had 21 points and 10 rebounds to helpe keep the Orange in the game in the second half.

Chloe Bibby had 15 points and nine rebounds, and the host Terrapins clinched the Big Ten regular-season championsh­ip with a victory over the Nittany Lions.

Mackenzie Jones scored 11 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter as the host Hoosiers pulled away from in-state rival Boilermake­rs and set a school record for most conference wins in a season with their ninth straight win.

Destinee Wells scored a career-high 32 points to lead Belmont to a 83-75 win over Tennessee Martin in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championsh­ip game. Dasia Young had 19 points and nine rebounds for UT Martin.

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M pitchers Bryce Miller and Chandler Jozwiak combined to strike out 21 batters in a 5-0 victory over New Mexico State on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park.

With the performanc­e, A&M came one strikeout short of the single-game team record set last season against Army.

The duo did not walk or hit a batter in the game and they scattered five hits in the shutout. The tally was the most times a New Mexico State team has struck out in a game.

Miller (2-0) earned the win, logging career highs in innings pitched (7.0), pitches thrown (107) and strikeouts (15).

The 15 strikeouts was the most by an A&M player since Casey Fossum posted the same number against Baylor in 1998.

Jozwiak closed out the final two frames, scattering one hit while recording all six outs via strikeout.

It was A&M’s 11th double-digit strikeout performanc­e in 12 games.

The duo held the New Mexico State bats to 0 for 8 with runners on and 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position.

Texas A&M had itself a pitcher’s duel early, with Miller dealing, but it left space for the offense to break open the game.

A&M took the early lead after scoring one run in the home half of the second.

Zeroes filled the board until a four-run seventh when Ty Coleman delivered the big blow with a lined two-RBI single up the middle.

Texas A&M improved to 8-4, while New Mexico State dropped to 1-5.

Russell Smith allowed two hits and struck out 13 for the Horned Frogs (9-2) in the Shriners Hospital College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

Phillip Sikes was 3 for 4 with two doubles for TCU.

The Owls (4-5) overcame a 4-2 deficit with six runs in the top of the fourth inning, then added six more in the sixth to down the Islanders in the Shriners Hospital College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

Designated hitter Justin Dunlap was 2 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs.

Roel Garcia allowed four runs on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings to earn the win.

The Red Raiders (7-3) exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning, led by shortstop Cal Conley’s grand slam, en route to shutting out the Bearkats in the Shriners Hospital College Classic at Minute Maid Park.

Conley finished 2 for 5. Patrick Monteverde allowed three hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings for the victory.

Matt Dillard allowed one run on three hits with eight strikeouts in six innings for Sam Houston State.
