GRANT COOK

1937-2021

Damon Grant Cook, attorney and resident of Houston, passed away on March 13, 2021 at the age of 83.

Grant is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kelly Cook Lybrand and Julio Lybrand, his grandson Crady Helt, all residents of Houston, Texas as well as his brother and sister-in-law,

Tim Cook and Marilyn Cook, and his nephew Grant Cook, all of Austin, Texas and his niece, Liza Cook Kelso of Richmond, Virginia. Kyle Cook, Grant’s beloved son, predeceased him on January 11, 2015, but lived on in his heart for the rest of his days. As a testament to Grant’s abiding faith he believed in his heart that he would be once again reunited with his Momma Cook, Daddy Cook, Kylie Boo and all the other dear friends and relatives who have crossed the river before him and are now joyfully embraced in the loving arms of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Grant was born in Fort Worth, Texas on March 27, 1937 to his parents W.E. Buster Cook and Edith Lorene Cook late of Houston, Texas. Grant grew up from the age of nine in Beaumont, Texas. A graduate of Beaumont High School in 1955, Grant attended Tulane University and Baylor Law School where he earned his Juris Doctor degree in 1961. For the ensuing sixty years Grant served as a civil trial lawyer in Houston, Texas. Over the course of his career he represented a number of Fortune 500 companies, as well as property owners, individual investors, and banking organizations in the capacity of both plaintiff and defendant. Prior to his death he was a member of The Faubus Firm of Houston, Texas.

Over the course of his career Grant was admitted to practice law by the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Western Districts of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth and Eleventh Circuits, and the Texas and New York Bar Associations. He was admitted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and as an Associate in the American Board of Trial Advocates as well as various local and state bar associations. He was recognized on numerous occasions for his work in the field, earning the title of one of the Best Lawyers in Texas by the Wall Street Journal and inclusion into publications including Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, and Who’s Who in America. Grant considered among his most satisfying accomplishments the friendships and relationships he developed over his many years as a mentor and counselor for many of his colleagues, particularly younger lawyers beginning their careers. Grant was a lawyer’s lawyer.

Grant was a long time member of the Chaple wood United Methodist Church and greatly enjoyed participating in the bible studies group and the interactions with his fellow members.

An avid golfer, Grant was a lifelong member of Brae Burn Country Club and from time to time provided pro bono representation to members of the Brae Burn staff who needed his help. Grant was a member of the Tejas Vaqueros for 38 years and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity since 1955.

Due to the social limitations imposed by the Covid Virus, a memorial service will be held at the appropriate time in the future. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations in Grant’s name should be made to the M.D. Andersen Cancer Center.
