BRUCE MARTIN MCINTYRE
1927-2021
Bruce Martin McIntyre was born on the 1st of August 1927, and went to be with the Lord on Monday, the 8th of March 2021. He was 93 years of age.
Bruce was born in Denver, Colorado. His family moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and later settled in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Bruce graduated from St. John’s Military Academy in 1945. He served in the U.S. Navy and after participating in the “Battle of Alcatraz,” he was discharged in August of 1946 with the Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. Degree in 1950 and Harvard Business School with an MBA Degree in 1952. While at Harvard he was a member of the Owl Club,
The Hasty Pudding Club and Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
He began a very successful career in the oil and gas industry with Sinclair Oil & Gas Company in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, eventually advancing to district Landman & Manager of the Denver, Colorado district. In 1963 he left Sinclair to join the Jenney
Oil Company in Chestnutt Hill, Massachusetts until 1969 when he helped take C&K Petroleum public in Houston, Texas. After Alaska Interstate bought C&K in 1979, he continued in various independent activities including serving as Trustee and Manager of private interests.
Bruce traveled all over the world during his oil & gas career including Canada, the United Kingdom, the North Sea, Asia, Indonesia, Venezuela and Russia. Of all the places he went to, his very favorite was La Jolla, California. It was where he met his future wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen Neale. He loved to play golf and was a member of the La Jolla Country Club, Cherry Hills Country Club of Denver, the Willow Creek Golf Club of Houston and the Coronado Club of Houston. He also enjoyed backgammon and hosted the annual Beach Rat Backgammon Tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. He also enjoyed going to the horse races at the Del Mar Racetrack.
While living in Boston and as a member of the Country Club in Brookline, he took up the sport of curling, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He even brought the sport to Houston and helped found the Houston Curling Club when the Galleria opened.
Bruce had many interests and was knowledgeable on so many topics. He never stopped learning and had an incredible memory. He could carry on a conversation about any subject. He lived a remarkable life and had fascinating stories to share. He also had a wonderful sense of humor. An eternal optimist, his positive outlook on life was contagious.
Bruce was a kind and loving father, always supportive of those he loved. He was gracious, generous and loyal. He made friends for life. He always remained humble and respectful with everyone he encountered.
Bruce was a life-long Episcopalian and a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church since 1969.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Alice Martin and Paul Joseph McIntyre; his wife, Mary Neale McIntyre; and his sister, Jean McIntyre Banks.
He is survived by his daughter, Betsy McIntyre Harris and her husband
Dan Harris; his son, John Neale McIntyre and his wife Virginia “Genny” Newell McIntyre; his brother-in-law, R.C. “Buzzie” Banks; his nephew, Charles Gilbert II; his niece, Ann Gilbert Wylie; his grandchildren, Danny
Ray & Clayton Harris, and Madi & Mason McIntyre; and his great-grandchildren, Ashlee, Duncan, Evelyn & Benjamin Harris.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Village of Tanglewood for taking such good care of Bruce while he lived there.
The family would especially like to thank Christie Frazier. She was much more to Bruce than a Personal Assistant.
She became his dear and trusted friend.
Family and friends are cordially invited to a gathering and sharing of remembrances of Mr. McIntyre from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 24th of March, at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A memorial service is to be conducted at three o’clock in the afternoon on Thursday, the 25th of March, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road in Houston, where The Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr., Rector, will officiate.
