JANET LOUISE MORENCY PHELPS

Janet Louise Morency Phelps died in her sleep on March 15, 2021, at the age of 91. She was born in 1930 to Alfred Joseph Morency Jr and Gladys May McLean Morency in Highland Park, Michigan. Her parents divorced in 1937 and Janet moved with her mother and sister Shirley to Danvers, Massachuse­tts, where she graduated from Holten High School in 1948.

In 1949, she met Herbert E. Phelps from Santa Monica, California. They married in September of that year and moved to Santa Monica, and then to Granada Hills, California. They had two sons there, Gary Edwin Phelps and Bradley Jay Phelps, and a daughter, Caryl Lee Phelps.

The family moved to Houston in 1966. Janet worked in retail at the Joske’s and Dillard’s department stores for many years. She enjoyed refinishin­g and decorating furniture, reading, and doing volunteer work. She was shy, but made many friends wherever she lived or worked. She was widowed in 1985.

Janet was member of the congregati­on at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church for 55 years.

In 2002, she met her friend Jim Martin at church, and they enjoyed many years of traveling, dining out, and watching old movies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Caryl, her son Bradley, her husband Herbert, and her sister, Shirley Elizabeth Morency Cochrum. She is survived by her son Gary Phelps and his wife Paulette Barwinkel, her brother Ric Morency, and her nieces Mary Elizabeth Merrill, Sarah Lewicki, Karen Clarke, Nancy Needham, and nephews Steven Durkee and Jeffrey Durkee.

The family wishes to thank the management and staff of the Atria Westchase assisted living facility for all their amazing support and many kindnesses.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
