Reese Alfred “Mat” Mathieu, Jr. beloved husband, father, grandfathe­r, great grandfathe­r and friend, passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas on January

13, 2021, at the age of 96.

Mat was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on February

26, 1924, and raised in the town of Verdon. After high school Mat enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. He flew 50 missions as a navigator in WWII and finished his service as a First Lieutenant. After the war Mat received a BBA from the University of Texas and met his wife, Marie. He went on to complete a 34 year career with Reliable Battery Company in Houston. Mat was a long time member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. He was active in the Houston Rotary Club and was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow Award Recipient. Mat was proud to be associated with the American Legion, the VFW and the WWII 449th Bomb Group. He enjoyed volunteeri­ng with Habitat for Humanity and the

Houston Memorial Assistance Ministry. Although he loved to travel, Mat was a “homebody” who loved his home, gardening, and just being a good neighbor to many, and truly enjoyed family and friends when they visited.

Mat is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Marie Adair Mathieu, a son Reese Mathieu III and his wife Martha, three grandchild­ren and six great grand children. A private Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at First United Methodist Church Richardson. The service will be Livestream­ed at www.fumcr. com/Live. Please visit www.
