Mond makes pro debut in lopsided preseason loss

MINNEAPOLI­S — Former Texas A&M standout Kellen Mond made his pro debut Saturday in the Minnesota Vikings’ 33-6 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos.

The third-round pick went 6-of-16 for 53 yards and rushed five times for 25 yards after missing a big chunk of training camp to COVID-19.

Lawrence given harsh welcome

No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence’s pro debut opened with a sack and a fumble, but he rebounded to finish 6-of-9 for 71 yards in the Jaguars’ 23-13 loss Saturday to the Cleveland Browns in Jacksonvil­le.

Wilson efficient in first action

Second overall selection Zach Wilson was solid in his first NFL preseason game, going 6-of-9 for 63 yards and leading the New York Jets to a field goal against the Giants’ backups in a 12-7 victory at Giants Stadium.

Lance struggles as 49ers lose

No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance struggled in his preseason debut with the San Francisco 49ers, finishing 5-of-14 for 128 yards, though he did toss an 80-yard touchdown pass in a 19-16 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl LIV.

Former Texas and SMU quarterbac­k Shane Buechele snuck in from a yard out with 1:14 left to win it for the Chiefs.

Fields rallies Bears to victory

First-round pick Justin Fields brought Chicago back from a 13-0 deficit in his preseason debut by throwing for a touchdown and running for one in a 20-13 home victory over the Miami Dolphins.

In just over two quarters of playing time, Fields was 14-of-20 for 142 yards.

The Bears also got a win off the field, with veteran tackle Jason Peters agreeing to a one-year deal.

Brady makes cameo in loss

Tom Brady and the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the preseason with a 19-14 home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ravens’ streak hits 18 games

Tyler Huntley ran for a 7-yard touchdown with 6:35 left as the Baltimore Ravens extended their preseason winning streak to 18 games with a 17-14 home victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Vegas backup leads the way

Third-string quarterbac­k Nathan Peterman completed 29 of 38 pass attempts for 246 yards, and host Las Vegas opened the preseason with a 20-7 victory over Seattle.

With starter Derek Carr skipping the opener, and backup Marcus Mariota nursing a leg injury, Peterman looked solid while playing most of the game.

Chargers top Rams

Darius Bradwell rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter, and the Los Angeles Chargers beat the Los Angeles Rams 13-6 in the first NFL game with fans at SoFi Stadium.

Cowboys DT out 6-8 weeks

Cowboys defensive tackle Neville Gallimore dislocated his left elbow in Friday’s 19-16 preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals and will miss 6-8 weeks, a source told ESPN.
