Sale wins first start since 2019

BOSTON — Chris Sale got the win in his first big league game in two years as the Boston Red Sox hit five homers while pounding the Baltimore Orioles 16-2 on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Sale (1-0) completed his return from Tommy John surgery by pitching five innings, giving up two runs on consecutive homers by Austin Hays and Trey Mancini in the third.

Sale last pitched in the majors on Aug. 13, 2019. BRAVES 12, NATIONALS 2: Ozzie Albies homered for the fourth straight game, Dansby Swanson had two homers and six RBIs, and surging Atlanta won on the road. Albies’ 22nd homer of the season — a two-run shot off struggling starter Patrick Corbin (6-12) in the fifth inning — landed in the Washington bullpen in left-center field.

PIRATES, BREWERS SPLIT: Kevin Newman tied a major league record with four doubles — in successive innings, no less — as Pittsburgh rolled over visiting Milwaukee 14-4 to snap its eight-game losing streak in the first game of a doubleheader. In the second game, rookie Aaron Ashby and three relievers combined on a fourhitter, and Milwaukee blanked Pittsburgh 6-0.

YANKEES 7, WHITE SOX 5 (10): Joey Gallo hit a tworun shot in the 10th inning for his second homer of the game, Aaron Judge went deep again and had four RBIs, and visiting New York outlasted Chicago in another backand-forth thriller.

PHILLIES 6, REDS 1: Matt Moore and the Phillies bullpen took a no-hitter into the eighth, Bryce Harper hit a Little League homer, and Philadelphia two-hit visiting Cincinnati.

MARLINS 5, CUBS 4: Magneuris Sierra hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as Miami beat visiting Chicago. Brian Anderson homered and drove in four runs for Miami, which earned its third consecutive victory.

TIGERS 6, INDIANS 4: Miguel Cabrera did not hit career homer No. 500, but his leadoff walk sparked Detroit’s two-run eighth inning, leading to a win at home.

ATHLETICS 8, RANGERS 3: Third baseman Matt Chapman hit two of Oakland’s five solo homers and made a spectacular diving catch running into the outfield to help take down host Texas.

TWINS 12, RAYS 0: Kenta Maeda pitched six effective innings, Luis Arraez hit a two-run homer, and Minnesota shut down visiting Tampa Bay.

DODGERS 2, METS 1 (10): Cody Bellinger hit a tiebreaking double in the 10th inning to lift Los Angeles to a road win after Will Smith homered in the seventh for the first hit off New York starter Taijuan Walker.

CARDINALS 9, ROYALS 4: Nolan Arenado homered and drove in four runs, helping St. Louis breeze by host Kansas City.

ROCKIES 4, GIANTS 1: Kyle Freeland pitched six strong innings to win his third straight start, C.J. Cron hit his 19th home run, and Colorado got a rare road win, ending San Francisco’s six-game winning streak.

MARINERS 9, BLUE JAYS 3: Luis Torrens homered in the seventh, sending Ty France and Abraham Toro home as well, putting host Seattle ahead for good.
