A final three days

After years of struggling with bipolar disorder and schizophre­nia, Stetson Hoskins was finally ready to get help. On Jan. 7, 2020, Stetson wound up at a short-term mental health center in an attempt to get care. Over the course of three days, Stetson was shuffled back and forth between an emergency room and a psychiatri­c facility.

1. Crisis Treatment Center, run by Heart of Texas Region Mental Health Mental Retardatio­n Center.

Jan. 7, 2020:

Stetson Hoskins winds up at the center, hoping that long-term mental health care and medication­s will finally quiet the voices in his head.

2. Ascension Providence Hospital Jan. 7, 2020 - 10:52 p.m.:

Police are called after Stetson pushes a security officer at the Crisis Treatment

Center. But police realize that he is too ill to be released to the streets. They place him under an emergency detention order and transport him to the emergency room at Ascension Providence.

3. Ascension Providence DePaul Center

Jan. 8, 2020 - 2:31 p.m.:

Doctors order a transfer for Stetson to this 64-bed psychiatri­c facility for care after he told emergency room doctors that he wanted to kill himself.

4. Ascension Providence Hospital Jan. 9, 2020 - 3:05 p.m.:

Police place Stetson under an emergency detention order and transport him to the hospital’s emergency room after he shoves a security officer at DePaul. He told the police that he was going to jump into traffic if released.

5. The 100 block of W. Texas 6 Jan. 10, 2020 - 3:05 p.m.:

Police are called to the scene of a highway crash that left one dead. Stetson had been released from the hospital about 45 minutes before — despite repeatedly telling doctors and ER nurses that he was going to jump into traffic if he was released — and made the 20-minute walk to this spot. He hung his backpack on the guardrail and considered his next move.
