Alta Jean Weyland died on January 8, 2022 peacefully of natural causes. Born August 28, 1930 in Shreveport, LA as the only child of Clyde and Virginia McConathy. After attending Mary Baldwin College in Virginia, she graduated from Centenary College with degrees in English and History. She was predecease­d by her husband, James H. Weyland, of 57 years and her son, James M. Weyland. A. J. is survived by her daughter, H. Virginia Weyland and her husband Donald J. Riehl, grandchild­ren, James S. Moehlman and Kathleen M. Weyland, and godchildre­n, Martha Smythe Brophy and Nicholas C. Stephens.

Alta Jean devoted her life to her family and friends.

Her kitchen was full of Southern delicacies and her home filled with generation­s of family, friends and dogs. She was an active member of The Junior League and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. If it was the fourth Sunday of the month, you could always find Alta Jean in the church library where she served as a librarian for decades. All who knew her will miss her quick wit, easy laugh and gentle touch. She is leaving the world a better place and the beautiful art she painted will be lovingly cherished.

A Memorial Service will be held at two o’clock in the afternoon on Friday, April 8, 2022 at St. Martin’s Episcopal Christ Chapel, 717 Sage Road, Houston, Texas 77056. Immediatel­y following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjecent Christ Chapel Reception Hall.
