You can find help with small remodeling jobs and repairs

- By Larry Abbott

Even though home improvement projects look easy on TV, this is not usually the case. In fact, it is recommended that you hire a professional for a number of reasons, most importantly to ensure that a job is completed the right way.

Finding help with small remodeling jobs or repairs can be challenging. Who do you call, a remodeler or a handyman?

It depends on what skill level your project requires to help you determine whether you will need to hire a handyman or a remodeler. Keep in mind that a handyman may not necessarily save you money, it depends on the type of project you are considering.

Where do you start when looking for someone to do a small remodeling job or repair? Here are some tips:

• Create a list of all of the work you need done. It is usually best to list room by room or go clockwise around the outside of the home.

• Have a timetable, and map out deadlines for when you need to have the work completed. Determine how flexible you can be.

• Search local resources to find contractors. The Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) website and the BBB are excellent sources when searching for reputable contractors.

• Obtain local references. Read Google reviews or request that the company/independent contractor provides you with a few recent references that you can call. Be sure to discuss project specifics, as well as reliability and punctuality.

• Find out how their work is priced — hourly or by the job. Firm contract prices are usually best for both parties.

• Ask direct questions about the contractor’s experience with previous projects similar to yours. See if they have any jobs in progress that you can see, drive by, or talk with the homeowner.

In addition, it is important to choose someone who has liability insurance. It is also recommended that you get some sort of guarantee of work.

Depending on the scope of your project, it may be worthwhile to consider hiring a general contractor who has master carpenters, painters, plumbers and electricians as part of their team. It may cost you a little more, but it should guarantee that the job is done right the first time around, saving you a headache, time, and unanticipated additional expenses.
