2 builders commit to GHBA Benefit Homes Project in ‘22
This year, two home builders have committed to building a Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) Benefit Homes Project, a 42-year-old charity fundraiser that enlists donated construction management by GHBA builder members, and materials and services by GHBA associate members.
Taylor Morrison/ Darling Homes who will break ground in the spring, and HistoryMaker Homes will break ground in early summer. Both will build on homesites donated by the developers of the community.
Each year of the project, two homes are built that when sold at market value will raise funds for two local charities — HomeAid Houston and Operation Finally Home. It typically takes more than 100 vendors, trades and suppliers to build a new home. When the GHBA partners with a member to construct a Benefit home, the number is no different. Throughout the 42-year history of the GHBA Benefit Homes Project, more than 110 homes have been built with these donations, raising more than $12 million.
“The project starts with the commitment by the builder and the developer,” said Scott Merovitch, chairman of the project and a seven-time Benefit home builder. “The builder takes the lead to recruit the vendors and suppliers for donations. A huge cost of building is of course the lot, so that donation is critical to making this fundraiser successful. We can’t thank them enough for stepping up this year.”
There have been 24 developers who have participated in the project through donating a lot. Land Tejas is the top donor with 18 lot donations. Builders have included Arbor Home Corp, Brighton Builders, Ashton Woods, David Weekley Homes, Gateway Homes, Highland Homes, M/I Homes, MHI, Newmark and many others. Developers include Caldwell Companies, Friendswood Development, Lake Olympia Development, Midway Development, Newland Communities, Ryko Development, Rise Communities, to name a few.
