Groundbreaking: HomeAid, Abigail’s Place join Chesmar Homes
HomeAid Houston, Chesmar Homes, Abigail's Place and Attack Poverty broke ground Tuesday, July 26 on two 1,000 sq. ft. duplexes that will provide transitional living for mothers and their children in crisis situations. HomeAid Houston, a 501(c)(3) charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association (GHBA) helped facilitate the partnership between Abigail's Place and Chesmar Homes. Chesmar, led by Jeff Johnson, division president, will begin construction in the coming weeks.
Abigail's Place is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization serving displaced single mothers and their families in Fort Bend County by providing emergency housing support. Their mission is to empower displaced single mothers and their children who are facing circumstantial homelessness by providing transitional housing, resources, and advocacy. These circumstances can include the loss of a job, an illness, losing a family member who was the breadwinner, or fleeing domestic violence.
Attack Poverty works to empower people to attack poverty in their life and community by strengthening under-resourced communities through spiritual growth, education, revitalization and basic needs. The agency sold land to Abigail's Place for the new construction and will assist in providing resources for the new families.
Over 80 guests were on-hand for the event. Included were elected officials, state representative Jacey Jetton; Mayor Becky Haas of Richmond; Lamar Consolidated ISD trustee Zach Lambert; Lamar Consolidated ISD Trustee Mandi Bronsell with Bronsell also representing Fort Bend Commissioner Vincent Morales' office, and from Senator Joan Huffman's office was Jennifer Knesek. Also on hand were staff and board members from Abigail's Place, Attack Poverty and HomeAid Houston. Joining Johnson from Chesmar was Scott Merovitch, city president, and numerous staff who will be supporting construction.
