Gooden, Fisher propel Owls to win over Miners

The Rice women's basketball team defeated UTEP 62-53 on Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse, capping off 2022 with the team's first CUSA win of the season.

Tied at 43-43 entering the final quarter, Rice (10-2, 1-2 C-USA) used 7-of-12 shooting from the floor to upend the Miners (9-3, 2-1 C-USA).

Trinity Gooden led Rice with 13 points while Malia Fisher finished with a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds while adding two assists and two steals.

HOUSTON CHRISTIAN 68 NEW ORLEANS 59

Julija Vujakovic scored 18 points and Marilyn Nzoiwu had 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Huskies defeated the Privateers at Sharp Gym.

HCU (6-6, 1-0 SLC) shot lights out in the first period at just under 60 percent from the floor in the Southland Conference opener against the Privateers (1-9, 0-1).

NO. 23 BAYLOR 64, TCU 42

Caitlin Bickle scored 19 points and the Bears pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat TCU in a Big 12 Conference opener at Waco.

Bickle sank 8 of 12 shots, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and grabbed seven rebounds for the Lady Bears (10-3). Lucy Ibeh scored nine points to lead the Horned Frogs (6-6).

NO. 15 IOWA ST. 81 TEXAS TECH 58

Ashley Joens scored 22 points and Lexi Donarski 21, as the Cyclones used a strong finish to win at Lubbock in the teams'

Big 12 Conference opener.

Bre'Amber Scott led Texas Tech (12-2, 0-1) with 18 points.

TEXAS 87, KANSAS ST. 41

Rori Harman had 15 points and 13 assists and Sonya Morris scored 15 points as the Longhorns began Big 12 play Saturin day with a rout of the Wildcats at Austin for their seventh consecutiv­e victory.

The Longhorns forced 24 turnovers and turned those into 36 points.

Sabria Dean scored a game-high 20 points and Akasha Davis added 16 points as the Cardinals won at Beaumont.

UTSA 71, UAB 68

Freshman Sidney Love scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Roadrunner­s to a win at home.

Ana Llanusa scored 28 points, Madi Williams scored 24 and the Sooners pulled away for a win at Morgantown, W. Va.

Taylor Mikesell scored 16 points and Rikki Harris added 14 as the Buckeyes won their 15th straight game, coming from behind to beat the Wolverines at Columbus, Ohio.

Cotie McMahon had 12 for Ohio State (15-0, 4-0 Big Ten), which forced Michigan into a seasonhigh 27 turnovers. Cameron Williams paced the Wolverines (12-2, 2-1) with 18 points.

NO. 2 STANFORD 101 ARIZONA ST. 69

Hannah Jump hit three early 3-pointers and six all on the way to 20 points and the Cardinal won at home for their eighth straight victory.

The Cardinal (14-1, 2-0 Pac-12) jumped out to a 22-5 lead and kept going.

Lou Lopez Senechal had 22 points and Caroline Ducharme added 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Huskies to a win at home.

Aaliyah Edwards had nine points and eight rebounds and Juhasz added nine points and 10 rebounds for Connecticu­t (11-2, 4-0 Big East).

Holly Kersgieter scored 23 points to lead the Cowgirls over the Jayhawks.

Yvonne Ejim scored 24 points, Brynna Maxwell added 22 and the Bulldogs won at Los Angeles.

Kaylynne Truong added 18 points for the Bulldogs (14-2, 4-0 West Coast Conference). Nicole Rodriguez scored 14 points for the Lions (4-11, 1-3).

NO. 25 ST. JOHN’S 68 GEORGETOWN 48

Jayla Everett scored 20 points and the Red Storm extended the best start in program history to 13-0 with a win on the road.

Unique Drake added 18 points for St. John's (4-0 Big East).
