HomeAid Houston, a charity of the Greater Houston Builders Association, along with Amstill Roofing, recently came to the rescue of local non-profit Forgotten Angels when one of their group homes which houses intellectually and physically challenged adults was besieged by roof damage. The roof leaks were causing safety systems to malfunction, keeping the local fire marshall busy and with threatening rain, they needed help — fast.

A call placed to HomeAid was answered by Executive Director Carole Brady. “We are so grateful that in a situation like this, Forgotten Angels reached out to us realizing that HomeAid does more than build homeless shelters. HomeAid also completes smaller renovation and repair projects through our HomeAid Cares Program. Our deep relationships with Houston’s home builders and suppliers uniquely position us to be able to solve the major and minor construction needs of local nonprofit organizations. For this 4,500square-foot roof project, Amstill Roofing stepped forward to discount their labor and materials by 25% and promptly get the job done before the rain. Their commitment to community and excellence was proven through the quality of their work and follow-through. Funding from HomeAid Heroes fully supported the remainder of the project expense making this a true collaborative effort.”

HomeAid Heroes is a giving program developed to provide local companies with the opportunity to give back to the nonprofit community through donations that align with their company’s business model. As a HomeAid Hero, the company decides how they would like to contribute. The funds received from Heroes support the construction, renovation, or repair of housing to support Houston’s nonprofit community.

Amanda Peakes-Taylor, Executive Director at Forgotten Angels, said, “We are deeply appreciative to HomeAid Houston for replacing the roof at one of our group homes where we provide residential services to individuals with intellectual disabilities. This new roof has made a great difference in improving the quality of the living environment and ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. We are grateful for the generous assistance from HomeAid Houston.” Forgotten Angels operates in Pearland with a mission “to transform the lives of people living with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities — at home, at work and in the community.”

Sam Stilley, second-generation owner of Amstill Roofing, was instrumental in providing the new roof within a short window of time. Amstill’s dedication to this project was evident.

“This endeavor was more than just a roofing job for us at Amstill Roofing,” Stilley said. “It embodied our core pillars of commitment, willingness, teamwork, trust, integrity, and excellence. Providing a safe and secure home through our services is at the core of our values, and this project was a meaningful way to extend that commitment to those in need. By integrating our mission to enrich our staff, deliver superior service to our clients, and enhance the prosperity of our local communities, this project was a perfect reflection of our ethos.”

HomeAid’s mission is to help people experiencing or at risk of homelessness build new lives through construction, community engagement, and education.Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, it has completed 77 projects which house over 5,000 homeless men, women, and children annually.
