BOSTON RED SOX
Pitcher Brandon Workman lost an appeal of his six-game suspension for throwing near the head of Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria and he began serving it.
Workman was ejected from a May 30 game against the Rays for throwing up and behind third baseman Longoria. The righthander appealed and it was upheld Wednesday.
CLEVELAND INDIANS
Left fielder Michael Brantley has been diagnosed with a concussion and will likely be out of the lineup until Saturday, but he didn’t have to miss Wednesday’s game against the Angels, which was postponed by rain.
The concussion was diagnosed when Brantley had tests Tuesday at the Cleveland Clinic. He was injured trying to break up a double play sliding into second base in the third inning Monday.
Brantley was removed from the game and passed an initial concussion test, but was sent to the hospital after experiencing discomfort during his pregame routine Tuesday.
DETROIT TIGERS
Manager Brad Ausmus quickly apologized for making a sarcastic remark after Detroit’s latest loss when he told reporters he beats his wife when his team isn’t playing well.
MIAMIMARLINS
Veteran righthander Brad Penny agreed to a minor league contract with the team pending a physical.
Penny, 36, went 14-10 for the Marlins’ World Series championship team in 2003. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2012, when he appeared in 22 games with San Francisco, all in relief, and had an ERA of 6.11.
SAN DIEGO PADRES
The team has scheduled a public tribute to Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn for June 26 at Petco Park.
Gwynn died of cancer Monday. He was 54.
The tribute will start at 7:19 p.m., symbolic because Gwynn made his Padres debut on July 19, 1982.
