Hospital systems expand their Sugar Land facilities

Memorial Hermann begins addition as does Houston Methodist, which also will open emergency center

- By Bryan Kirk

Residents in Fort Bend County will have more convenient access to high-tech health care with the recent groundbreakings for two hospital additions in Sugar Land and the construction of an emergency care center in Missouri City that is nearly complete.

On June 4, Houston Methodist announced that the 9,600-square-foot, emergency care center would be open and accept patients on July 15.

“The new Houston Methodist Emergency Care Center gives Missouri City residents a firstclass ER right in their own neighborhood,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

The center, located at 8200 Texas 6, is between the Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities.

The center will be open 24/7 to treat patients of all ages. It includes 10 private treatment rooms, full-service X-ray, CT and ultrasound capabilities and will be staffed by board-certi- fied emergency medicine physicians specializing in emergency care from pediatric to geriatric patients, working alongside specially trained nursing and ancillary staff experienced in emergency care.

“Our goal is to provide a streamlined, easy-to-navigate system for patients who enter the center,” said Dr. Scott Rivenes, emer-

gency department medical director of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

The center is part of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s $131 million expansion to better serve patients from Fort Bend and surrounding areas.

“In the coming months, we’re looking forward to continued commercial development citywide, including the increase of private, medical care facilities,” said officials of Missouri City.

In May, Houston Methodist broke ground on a six-story patient tower, which will add 104 beds, primarily for intensive care and medical and surgical patients and will provide space for growth as needed.

The tower, projected to open in spring 2016, will increase the capacity of the hospital to 347 beds.

“Our investment in new facilities, like our new patient tower, enables us to continue to expand our service offerings and pro- vide the latest and most sophisticated procedures right here in Fort Bend,” Siebenaler said.

Just days earlier, Memorial Hermann broke ground on a $93 million expansion project that will upgrade the hospital’s emergency center, expand surgical capabilities and add a second medical professional building and a six-story, 155,000-squarefoot patient tower.

“As the population in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County continues to grow, it is our responsibility to respond with additional infrastructure, new technology and a higher level of service,” said Greg Haralson, CEO of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.

This is the first major addition to the hospital since it opened in 2006.

The first phase of construction, which will be completed this fall, will add eight beds to the hospital’s emergency center to bring the total to 26 and a new surgical suite with full digital integration. A new magnetic resonance im- aging machine and an advanced computed tomography scanner will also be installed.

Phase two will add a second professional office building and patient tower.

The new professional office building will provide 100,000square feet of combined physician offices, expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation services and outpatient imaging.

Meanwhile, construction of the tower is expected to begin in early 2015, and will include an expanded nursery and neonatal intensive-care unit, additional medical surgical beds and four shelled operating rooms to accommodate growth.

Sugar Land Mayor James Thompson lauded the relationship between Memorial Hermann and the city.

“I am proud of the strong partnership between the city of Sugar Land and Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital and the high quality, patient-centered care they have provided our residents for many years,” Thompson said.
