Three coaches honored for work
Agiannidis, Fields, Courtney receive recognition of their peers
Three highschool coaches in Fort Bend and Lamar Consolidated ISD earned coach of the year awards from their respective state coaches associations.
Fort Bend Bush’s Ronnie Courtney and Terry’s Melissa Fields earned awards from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches . Fort Bend Austin’s Mike Agiannidis was one of seven Class 5A girls coaches honored by the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches.
Fields was named the Dean Weese Outstanding Coach of the Year, given annually to the TABC’s top girls coach in each of the UIL’s five classifications. Fields led Terry to the Region III-4A semifinals for the first time in school history. The Lady Rangers finished with a 22-10 record.
Fields has been coaching for 23 years, the last 18 of which have come at Terry.
The TABC named Courtney the winner of the Don Coleman Oustanding Coach Award for Class 5A. Courtney led Bush to the regional championship game for the second year in arow.
The Broncos won 30 games for the second year in a row before falling to eventual state champion North Shore in the regional final. It is the secondyear in a row Bush was eliminated by the eventual champion.
Courtney led Bushto the Class 5A state title in 2010 and coached Willowridge’s state championship teams in 1999 and 2000.
Agiannidis has built one of the most consistent girls soccer programs in Houston, once going 90 consecutive district games without losing.
The Lady Bulldogs went 17-3-4 with a share of the District 23-5A title in 2014 and played all the way to the Region III-5A semifinals where they lost to Cinco Ranch.
Ridge Point to state
Ridge Point qualified for the 7-on-7 state tournament for the first time in school history by winning the Foster tournament on June 13. The Panthers defeated Cinco Ranch, Dawson and Travis in pool play and then defeated George Ranch in the semifinals to clinch the state berth. The Panthers followed that with a 22-21 victory over Seven Lakes in the championship game. The state tournament is scheduled for July 11-12 in College Station.
