The Cypress Springs boys track and field team recently accepted a $1,000 California Casualty Thomas R. Brown Athletic Grant in the school’s gymnasium.

The grant, presented to coach Michael Cahee and the Panthers, was one of 87 awarded to public high school athletic programs nationwide. Cy Springs is one of two high schools in Texas to earn the award.

Cahee said his athletes were a major part of the process when applying for the grant.

“I’m very excited for the students and the athletic program,” Cahee said in a release. “This is a big achievement. The grant will help with opportunities for the students and help provide uniforms, food, practice equipment and much more.”

The team believes the grant can only bring positive results to the team and the school supporting them.

“It will get us on the map as a school with a good reputation,” said sophomore Seth Freeman. Ranch, Langham Creek move on

Cy-Fair finished its season as the District 17-6A runner-up and regional quarterfinalist. Vela steps down Jav Vela went out on top. The long-time Klein Oak softball coach led the Panthers to a District 15-6A co-title and playoff return after a two-year absence.

Now he’s moving on after more than two decades with the program.

“I’ve been here for 21 years, since January of ’94, and they’ve got a good ballclub coming back, so it is a little difficult, but these are real good kids, so they’ll adjust and keep going,” Vela said.

The Panthers tied Spring atop 15-6A, then won a tiebreaker 5-4 for the No. 1 playoff seed. Klein Oak went 13-2 in district to clinch its return to the postseason.
