Mom who left kids at station probed
A woman who allegedly attempted to abandon her two young sons at a southwest Houston fire station Monday may face criminal charges, authorities said.
The case has been turned over to the Houston Police Department’s special victims division, which will determine what charges against the woman, if any, will be presented to the district attorney’s office for consideration, department spokeswoman Jodi Silva said Tuesday.
Child Protective Services took custody of the boys, ages 3 and 14 months old, late Monday night, agency spokeswoman Estella Olguin said.
Authorities said the woman dropped off the boys at Houston Fire Department station 73, 9640 Wilcrest Drive, at about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The woman, whose identity was not released, told firefighters she could not care for the children and left before they could stop her, authorities said.
Houston police and CPS were then called to the station and able to locate the woman a short time later.
She initially told authorities that the children were not hers but belonged to her boyfriend, with whom she had argued earlier in the day, authorities said. The woman told authorities that her boyfriend left during the argument, stating he did not want the children, and she later brought them to the fire station, authorities said.
The woman later said the children were hers, which CPS caseworkers were able to confirm, Olguin said, adding that they have not yet located the children’s father.
Olguin noted that the children were too old to fall under the state’s “Baby Moses” law, which allows parents to avoid prosecution if they deliver unharmed infants up to 60 days old to personnel at hospitals, fire stations, EMS locations or other designated safe havens where immediate medical attention is available.
