Texas singer crafts traditional songs
Independent country artist Jon Wolfe will perform at 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Masones Saloon. Tickets are $10.
Wolfe is known for hit singles on Texas country radio like “I Don’t Dance,” which explains why it’s best not to two-step into a stranger’s heart if you know you’ll only break it; “The Only Time You Call,” which features the hook “The whiskey must make you miss me because it’s the only time you call;” and “Smile on Mine,” a traditional uptempo boy-get-the-girl back plea. Each of them are catchy, well-crafted songs that highlight Wolfe’s strong voice that will remind listeners of some of the great performers of the genre.
Ten years ago, Wolfe had a day job as an energy trader at British Petroleum – working in downtown Houston with a degree in finance after transferring here with the company from Chicago in 2003. His first album was produced by local artist John Evans and he was then rooming with singersongwriter Hayes Carll in The Woodlands.
These days, he resides in Austin when he’s not busy touring supporting his latest album. This year, it’s Natural Man, another solid collection of honky tonk sing-a-longs that he’s performing in dancehalls from Alice to Waxahachie, and that’s just this month.
On his website Wolfe says he is most inspired by artists like George Strait, Clint Black, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and fellow-Oklahoma native Garth Brooks. Though the influence of these artists is clear in Wolfe’s work; his delivery and solid style is pure tradition and refreshingly shtick-free.
