Showing their firm grasp of academics and U.S. Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps curriculum, Mayde Creek High School NJROTC members brought home the organization’s Academic Bowl Championship for the second consecutive year, KISD officials have announced.

The annual national competition in Washington, D.C., tests NJROTC students in English, math and science, district officials said, and gives them an opportunity to learn the value of citizenship, academic competition and higher education opportunities.

With nearly 40 years’ law enforcement experience — more than 30 of those with the Katy ISD police department — Assistant Police Chief Robert Jinks has been promoted to KISD chief of police, officials said.

The appointment, which was effective Sept. 1, follows closely on the heels of longtime KISD Chief of Police Mark Hopkins’ retirement.

Jinks, whose career began in 1977, joined the KISD police department in 1984 as a security specialist and was named to the steering committee which studied the feasibility of a school district police department, officials said. The study culminated in the formation of the KISD PD in 1988.

District officials said Jinks is an executive board member of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force as well as the Houston Area Police Chief ’s Association.

Retiring KISD Fine Arts Executive Director Bob Bryant leaves big shoes to fill for Michael Ouellette, newly-appointed to the position.

According to district sources, Ouellette has 30 years’ experience in the field of education, beginning as a junior high band director in Cameron ISD.

Officials said Ouellette joined KISD in 2002 and has served as band director at Mayde Creek and Cinco Ranch high schools. He was named KISD assistant director of fine arts in 2013.
