Cypress Springs coach Rick Cobia was named the Houston Texans High School Coach of the Week last week.

He was chosen for his team’s 51-12 win over Mayde Creek.

“This is a job you do because you love it,” Cobia said in a release.

“I’ve done it for 33 years, and I’ve never one day regretted going to work. I consider it an honor to receive this award.”

The award came with a $2,500 check for the football program, which was delivered by Brett Stewart, the Texans’ marketing coordinator for events, and Texans cheerleaders during a practice last week.

Cobia also received a certificate signed by Texans coach Bill O’Brien and general manager Rick Smith. He’ll also be invited to the Texans’ annual Coach of the Week banquet at the end of the season.

The veteran coach said he’s proud of the direction the program is heading.

“I think (with) the long hours, and the level of commitment of the teachers, coaches, community and kids – that award is a direct reflection of the direction we’re trying to go,” said Cobia, in his fourth year at Cy Springs.

“The credit doesn’t go to one guy. There are a lot of people who made this happen.”

Byes go bye-bye

Only four Cy-Fair ISD teams played last week as all 10 teams take their bye week before district play begins.

Cy Lakes and Cy Ridge won their games, but Cy Creek and Jersey Village lost.

Lakes added to the Rams’ misery, winning 68-38 at Rhodes Stadium behind quarterback Le’teddrian Solomon’s seven touchdowns (five passing, two rushing), and Ridge edged Morton Ranch 35-28.

All 10 teams are back in action this week in the first round of District 17-6A play.

Cy Falls and Langham Creek and Cy Ranch and Cy Lakes play Thursday, Cy Ridge and Cy Woods and Cy-Fair and Cy Creek meet Friday, and Cy Springs and Jersey Village collide Saturday.
