Cards rally past Cubs in 8th
ST. LOUIS — Matt Carpenter tripled and scored twice, and Stephen Piscotty doubled in the winning run Wednesday, leading St. Louis past the Chicago Cubs 4-3 to end the Cardinals’ three-game losing streak.
The NL Central leaders scored three times in the eighth inning to avoid their first sweep at home this season and their first against the Cubs since September 2010.
Cubs lefthander Jon Lester left after seven dominant innings. He didn’t allow a hit after the third batter and retired 20 of his final 21 hitters.
MARINERS 6, RANGERS 0: Vidal Nuño pitched seven effective innings with 10 strikeouts and combined with two relievers to hold visiting Texas to one hit.
METS 5, NATIONALS 3: Yoenis Cespedes hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning moments after pinch hitter Kelly Johnson connected for a tying shot, and New York rallied past Washington for a pivotal three-game sweep.
TWINS 3, ROYALS 2: Pinch hitter Miguel Sano homered with two outs in the 12th inning, and visiting Minnesota beat AL Central-leading Kansas City.
ANGELS 3, DODGERS 2: Albert Pujols drove in Kole Calhoun with the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and Los Angeles snapped its eight-game skid in the Freeway Series.
RED SOX 10, BLUE JAYS 4: David Ortiz hit his 498th career home run, a three-run shot to cap a four-run third inning, as Toronto lost just its second series since late July.
PIRATES 5, REDS 4: Star Joey Votto went ballistic after a called strike and got ejected, with teammates and even an umpire needing to hold him back in Cincinnati’s home loss. Jung Ho Kang hit Pittsburgh’s first grand slam of the season.
BRAVES 8, PHILLIES 1: Julio Teheran threw seven impressive innings, Christian Bethancourt hit a go-ahead solo homer, and Atlanta beat host Philadelphia.
MARLINS 5, BREWERS 2: Tom Koehler tied a career high with 10 strikeouts over eight innings, and Christian Yelich had a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning for Miami.
ORIOLES 5, YANKEES 3: CC Sabathia’s strong start in his return from the disabled list was undone by Stephen Drew’s fielding misplays as Baltimore rallied.
INDIANS 6, WHITE SOX 4: Francisco Lindor had three hits, including a homer, Jose Ramirez also homered, and visiting Cleveland beat Chicago.
RAYS 8, TIGERS 0: Jake Odorizzi pitched six strong innings, and visiting Tampa Bay hit four homers in a rout.
