The Indianapolis Colts have suffered a major blow to their offense with the loss of starting quarterback Andrew Luck for the next two to six weeks with a lacerated kidney and a partially torn abdominal muscle.

The Colts announced Tuesday that the Houston native will be sidelined, but they don’t believe the injury will require surgery. Matt Hasselbeck, who defeated the Texans earlier this season when Luck had a shoulder injury, will start in his place.

Luck got hurt during a victory over the previously unbeaten Denver Broncos on Sunday, a win that provided the 4-6 Colts with a half-game lead over the 3-5 Texans. The Texans travel to play the Colts on Dec. 20 at Lucas Oil Stadium, and it’s presently undetermined if Luck will be playing in that game.

The Colts, who are off this week, next play the Falcons, followed by the Buccaneers, Steelers and Jaguars before the Texans.

“The injuries happened at the end of an early fourth-quarter scramble when Andrew was doing everything he could to get us the win,” Colts coach Chuck Pagano said in a statement. “Andrew was sore after the game and was feeling a little worse Monday afternoon, so we sent him to get tests. It’s way too early to guess how long Andrew will be out.”

For the season, the Pro Bowl QB has passed for 1,881 yards, 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions for a 74.9 passer rating.
