Brady vs. Manning: They face off one more time

Quarterbac­ks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will face off for the 17th time — and the fourth with the Super Bowl on the line — this Sunday in Denver. Brady and the Patriots have won 11 timis. A look at the history:

Patriots 44, Colts 13

Sept. 30, 2001

This was Brady’s first NFL start—filling in for the injured Drew Bledsoe. And while the defense played a central role in the victory (four turnovers, two intercepti­ons returned for touchdowns), Brady didn’t make any major mistakes. He completed 13 of 23 passes for 168 yards.

Patriots 38, Colts 17

Oct. 21, 2001

The Colts had more yards, but the Patriots defense held Manning to just one touchdown. Brady threw for three touchdowns, two to David Patten in winning for the third time in four starts since taking over for Drew Bledsoe. The Patriots led 28-6 at the half in Indianapol­is.

Nov. 30, 2003

Manning rallied the Colts from a 31-10 deficit and had a chance to pull out a win in the waning moments. The Colts had firstand-goal at the 2, but ran Edgerrin James on three of four plays and failed to score.

Ty Law intercepte­d Peyton Manning three times but the Patriots couldn’t put away the Colts that easily. Brady’s offense had to settle for five field goals but avoided the big mistakes as New England advanced to the Super Bowl.

Sept. 9, 2004

Brady’s two third-quarter TD passes moved the Patriots ahead for good, but the Colts had a chance to tie. Willie McGinest sacked Manning for a 13-yard loss, pushing the Colts back, and Mike Vanderjagt missed a 48-yard field goal attempt as time expired.

Patriots 20, Colts 3 AFC divisional playoff Jan. 16, 2005

The Colts had scored 49 points in a wildcard win over the Broncos the previous week but were held out of the end zone by the Patriots. New England and Brady did a good job of keep away with a 15-minute advantage in time of possession.

Nov. 7, 2005

Manning and Brady combined for 586 passing yards and six touchdowns, however, it was the Colts defense that helped Manning to his first win over Brady. Indianapol­is forced a Corey Dillon fumble, and Manning converted it into a touchdown.

Nov. 6, 2006

The Colts were unbeaten as they headed to New England, and its defense forced Brady into one of his worst games with four intercepti­ons. Manning had two TD passes to Marvin Harrison to lead Indianapol­is.

Colts 38, Patriots 34 AFC championsh­ip game Jan. 21, 2007

The Colts trailed 21-6 at the half but finally went ahead 38-34 with one minute left on a Joseph Addai touchdown run. Marlin Jackson intercepte­d Brady to clinch the win and send Manning to his first Super Bowl.

Nov. 4, 2007

Manning led the Colts to a 20-10 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Brady passed to Wes Welker and Kevin Faulk for touchdown passes, and Jarvis Green sacked Manning, forcing a fumble to end the Colts’ comeback attempt.

Nov. 15, 2009

Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it on fourth-and-2 from his own 28 with the Patriots leading backfired. Kevin Faulk was stopped short after taking a pass from Brady. Manning hit Reggie Wayne for the winning TD as the Colts rallied from a 31-14 halftime deficit.

Nov. 21, 2010

The Patriots led 31-14, taking advantage of two early intercepti­ons of Manning but the Colts rallied and had a chance to win. James Sanders ended the rally with an intercepti­on of Manning at the Patriots 24 in the final minutes.

Oct. 7, 2012

In his first meeting against the Patriots as a Bronco, Manning’s rally came up short when Willis McGahee fumbled in the fourth quarter. The Patriots set a team record with 35 first downs but did most of their work on the ground, rushing for 252 yards.

Nov. 24, 2013

The Patriots, who lost three fumbles, fell behind 24-0 at home in the first half After Brady led the Patriots back to a 31-24 lead, Manning drove the Broncos 80 yards to force overtime. The Patriots prevailed after a muffed punt set up a field goal.

Broncos 26, Patriots 16 AFC championsh­ip game Jan. 19, 2014

Manning hit the 400-yard mark passing for the first time against the Patriots to reach the Super Bowl again. Brady was sacked twice, including a 10-yard loss on fourth-and-one from the Broncos 28 in the third quarter that helped seal the game.

Nov. 2, 2014

Manning lost for the seventh time in his career at Gillette Stadium as Brady put the game out of reach early with two secondquar­ter touchdowns for a 27-7 halftime lead.
