Vonn continues Cortina success
Another day in Cortina, another record for Lindsey Vonn.
The American won a World Cup super-G for her 11th career victory at Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, breaking the resort record of retired Austrian standout Renate Goetschl.
“It’s incredible to think back to when I was racing with Renate — it seemed like she won every single race in Cortina and she seemed unbeatable,” Vonn said. “And to have surpassed her now, it’s kind of hard to process all of these records. It’s hard to imagine having more success than my idols.”
By winning a downhill Saturday, Vonn eclipsed Annemarie MoserProell’s mark of 36 career wins in skiing’s marquee event.
And last year at Cortina, Vonn surpassed Moser-Proell’s women’s record of 62 wins across all events.
With another nearperfect run down the Olympia delle Tofane course, Vonn beat Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein by 0.69 seconds, with Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany third, 1.15 back. In other news: • Henrik Kristoffersen used a blistering second run to win a men’s World Cup slalom at Kitzbuehel, Austria, for his fifth victory of the season and ninth overall. The Norwegian skier was 0.85 seconds off the lead in 12th after the opening leg before surpassing all rivals in the final run. Kristoffersen finished in 1 minute, 43.96 seconds to edge Marcel Hirscher of Austria by 0.03. Germany’s Fritz Dopfer, who led after the first run, dropped to third, 0.45 behind Kristoffersen.
