High school basketball: 10 games to watch
1 Dawson at South Houston, 7 p.m. Friday 2 Clear Creek at Dickinson, 7 p.m. Friday
The high school basketball season is coming down the stretch in district races. A look at 10 boys’ games to watch this week:
Since Nick Hernandez joined the lineup following injury and illness, South Houston has won 13 games in a row, 20 of its last 21, and meets Dawson for the district title.
Dickinson beat the Wildcats during the first round of 24-6A play, but road losses before and after — plus a Clear Creek loss at Clear Brook — sets up a first-place showdown.
3 Cypress Ranch at Cypress Falls, 7 p.m. Tuesday
With the Mustangs tied with Cypress Lakes for first and Cy Falls in second after losing to Cy Lakes in overtime Tuesday, the District 17-6A title should come down to the end.
4 Port Arthur Memorial at North Shore, 7 p.m. Tuesday
After North Shore (8-2 in 21-6A) held off Baytown Sterling and the Titans (7-3) had a bye Tuesday, next week should decide the title as Memorial goes for the sweep.
5 Humble at Kingwood Park, 7 p.m. Friday
The Wildcats won Tuesday to qualify for the postseason for the 23rd consecutive year and trail Kingwood Park by a game in the District 21-5A standings with two left to play.
6 Bush vs. Elkins, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wheeler
The top two teams in Class 5A according to the state’s basketball coaches meet for the second time, with Elkins looking to avenge a last-second 61-60 loss on Jan. 23.
7 Columbia at Brazosport, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
District 28-4A is one of the best races the area has, as four teams entered the week tied for first and all four, including Columbia going to Brazosport, meeting on the last day.
8 Stafford at La Marque, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday
These two are the other teams in the 28-4A quartet, with La Marque, a state qualifier last season with no seniors, looking to get revenge from a ninepoint loss Jan. 29.
9 Beaumont Kelly at St. Thomas, 7:30 p.m. Friday
St. Thomas beat Concordia Lutheran on Tuesday, forcing a tie in district, and with Concordia Lutheran finishing Thursday, an Eagles win would keep pace going into the playoffs.
10 Langham Creek at Cypress Creek, 7 p.m. Friday
The Lobos are 7-4 in district play and one game ahead of Cypress Creek, so the rematch — Langham Creek won 51-48 on Jan. 15 — should 17-6A’s final playoff spot.
