Museum opens doors to Cuba

- By Kim Moeller

KCAM – Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend, 805 Ave. B, will host “Cuba Behind Open Doors,” a FotoFest Exhibition by Kevin Dougas West through May 1. This year’s theme is “Changing Circumstances: Looking at the Future of the Planet.” West addresses the restrictions on travel between the U.S. and Cuba being lifted in 2015. His photography takes a colorful and personal look at a country whose recent history has been dramatically changed with this new openness.

“I tend to seek out the stories most people don’t or can’t tell,” West said. “Cuba has been on my bucket list for over 10 years, and when travel restrictions were eased in 2015, three weeks later I was on a flight to Havana. I love the place, the music, art, people, history. It’s a country frozen in 1959, and how lucky I was to see it.” His photos include “Cigar Lady of Havana,” above. The opening artist reception is 5-7 p.m. Saturday, March 19.

KCAM– Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend is participating in this year’s biennial FotoFest.

This year’s theme — “Changing Circumstances: Looking at the Future of the Planet” — features an array of work that offers commentary on the world and its rapid evolution.

The museum will feature “Cuba Behind Open Doors,” the work of Kevin Douglas West. In light of recent political developments, West addresses the restrictions on travel between the United States and Cuba being lifted in 2015. West’s photography takes a colorful and personal look at a country whose recent history has been dramatically changed with this new openness.

Many of the subjects in West’s work for the exhibition feature the people of Cuba, including their place amongthe architecture.

He also highlights the time lock of the 1950s in the country including the cars, fashion and other elements that remain from that time period.

“Cuba Behind Open Doors” is on view at the museum now through May 1. The opening reception for the artist is March 19 from 5-7 p.m. at the museum.

West lives in Katy and is a founding supporter and director of the KCAM film school.
