hospital system employees took top spots in two team divisions during the Fit Company Challenge, a corporate wellness event held Feb. 20 at Houston Sports Park.

The challenge provides companies the opportunity to show the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The Houston Methodist hospital system took the top overall company spot and top spot in the large team division during the event, which provides companies the opportunity to show the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. It is the hospital system’s second consecutive year to place in the top positions of the two divisions.

Hundreds of employees from 27 companies in the Houston-area took part in the Fit Company Challenge, which is put together by the Austin-based Fit Company Institute. The challenge’s participants worked in teams of three to four toward completing a variety of fitness challenges tailored to each team’s member fitness levels and earn points for their company’s overall score.

“Houston Methodist had an amazing time participating in the Fit Company Challenge again this year,” said Jennifer Borders, the hospital system’s director of wellness services, in a news release. “We had 12 teams fighting for the No. 1 spot. Everyone had fun and woke up the next morning very sore.”

Borders said the hospital system, headquartered at its flagship hospital at 6565 Fannin St., will participate in the event again next year.

Homebuilder David Weekley Homes, headquartered at 111 N. Post Oak Road, also competed in the event and took the top spot in the Medium Team Division.

The company’s team captain, Jackie Hanson, said participating in the challenge inspired her team members to push themselves toward achieving their fitness goals.

“I felt that this event brought our team closer as we worked together toward a common goal, and it was encouraging to see everyone cheering each other on from start to finish,” said Hanson, who is the human resources and benefits administrator for David Weekly Homes.

More than 40 volunteers assisted contenders during the event. Participants were challenged with strength, conditioning, power, agility and endurance tests. Participants used their involvement to bring out company team members, and family members to cheer them on and promote the importance of having fun and effective corporate wellness programs at their businesses, according to a Fit Company Institute news release.

The fittest companies overall included, in order of ranking, Houston Methodist, David Weekley Homes, Noble Energy and EP Energy. To learn more about the challenge, visit www.fitcompany.com.
