New York Times bestselling author headlines literacy event
Attendees at the Literacy Council of Fort Bend’s fourth annual “Reading Between the Wines” event have a treat in store.
Set for April 1 at Safari Texas, one of the six featured authors is a New York Times bestselling author and poet.
Mary Karr’s first book, “The Liars’ Club: A Memoir, ” is credited with starting a memoir revolution and won many awards. The book looks back at her upbringing in a swampy East Texas refinery town with a volatile, defiantly loving family, a “terrific family of liars and drunks.” But through all of the raw authenticity, she manages to lace her story with humor, and readers will find themselves laughing out loud.
Karr has since published several other books earning acclaim.
Presenting sponsor for the evening is the Fred and Mabel R. Parks Foundation, and chairs Helen Bow and Gena Horak promise an evening of good books, good wines and good times.
Honorary chairs are Pete and Nancy Olson, and Nancy will be the event’s emcee.
Individual tickets are $125, and include a “restaurant stroll” featuring tastes from local chefs and restaurants, music and an opportunity to bid on auction items.
Sponsorships are still available, ranging from $500 to $10,000. Sponsor benefits include admission to a pre-event party, reserved premier seating, and more.
For tickets, go to the website at www.fortbendliteracy.org, or call the literacy office at 281-2408181.
