Early voting begins Monday to fill the state representative seat vacated when Sylvester Turner became Houston’s mayor at the beginning of the year.

Democrats Jarvis D. Johnson, a former City Council member, and Rickey “Raykey” Tezino, an educator, will square off in the May 7 special election for House District 139

Harris County Clerk Stan Stanart encouraged residents to take advantage of a pair of new voting locations that have been added to help reduce wait times for the northwest Houston district’s 91,000 registered voters.

Until May 3, voters can cast their ballots at four locations in Houston: Acres Homes Multi-Service Center at 6719 W. Montgomery, Lone Star College’s Victory Center at 4141 Victory, Fallbrook Church at 12512 Walters, and the Harris County Administration Building at 1001 Preston.

“This special election provides voters in SRD 139 the opportunity to let their voices be heard and familiarize themselves with the new early voting locations in the area,” Stanart said in a statement.

“Voting early is the best option because, by law, voters are limited to their designated polling location on Election Day.”

Prior to his victory in December’s mayoral runoff against opponent Bill King, Turner had represented District 139 since 1988.
